Thinkers Exploring Questions That Matter

The POLIS Fellowship develops and connects diverse thinkers who investigate important questions, generate knowledge and help translate research into community and philanthropic intelligence.
About the Fellowship

Fellowship Levels

The Fellowship is organized into five levels. Each level reflects a different kind of contribution.

Senior Fellows

Established researchers and practitioners with deep subject expertise. Senior Fellows lead commissioned studies, shape research design and provide thought leadership on complex community issues.

Creative Fellows

Artists, filmmakers, writers and designers who translate research and community voice into work people can feel. Creative Fellows carry findings into film, narrative and public storytelling.

Project Fellows

Fellows attached to a specific initiative or commissioned project for its duration. Project Fellows carry a defined piece of research or implementation work from question to deliverable.

Student Fellows

Undergraduate and graduate students working alongside POLIS researchers. Student Fellows gain applied research experience while contributing to live community work.

Community Fellows

Residents and grassroots leaders whose lived experience and local knowledge shape what gets studied and how. Community Fellows keep the research accountable to the neighborhoods it concerns.

Fellowship Research

Bring Us the Question.
We’ll Build the Research Around It.

Philanthropists, foundations, companies, nonprofits, and institutions can engage POLIS to investigate an issue, question, population, or community that matters to them through the POLIS Fellowship.
How It Works

From Your Question to Findings You Can Act On

Step 1

Bring Us the Question

Tell us what you want to better understand and what decisions, strategies, or investments the research could help inform.
Step 2

Explore Our Fellows

Meet our Fellows and explore their expertise, research interests, experience, and current work. You can identify a Fellow you’re interested in working with or ask POLIS to recommend the right fit.
Step 3

Start a Research Inquiry

Tell us about your question, goals, population or community of interest, geography, timeline, and any Fellow you may be interested in working with.
Step 4

Build the Research Team

POLIS reviews the inquiry and identifies the Fellow or combination of Fellows and POLIS capabilities best suited to the project. All research engagements are scoped, contracted, and managed through POLIS Institute.
Step 5

Investigate

Depending on the question, research may incorporate community listening and engagement, interviews and surveys, existing research, qualitative and quantitative analysis, GIS analysis and mapping, asset and resource mapping, data visualization and other appropriate research methods.
Step 6

Turn Findings Into Actionable Insight

POLIS translates what we learn into findings, recommendations, and other useful deliverables that help clients better understand the issue and determine what to do next.
Step 7

Inform Investment & Action

The research helps philanthropists and organizations make clearer decisions about strategy, resources, partnerships, and investment.
